The Rev. Chester Ashford, 78, of 591 Mitchell Road, Dudley, died Wednesday at Sunbridge Nursing Home in Mount Olive.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Greater St. John Free Will Baptist Church, 613 Mitchell Road. Pastor William Mitchell Jr. and Bishop Leamon Dudley will officiate. Interment will be in Old Mill Cemetery.

Rev. Ashford was a native of Jones County and was a retired City of Goldsboro employee. He was the retired pastor of St. Mary United Holy Church of Wilson, one of several churches he had served, and was a member of Saints Delight United Holy Church of Parkstown.

He is survived by three daughters, Elderess Annette Whitfield of the home; Evangelist Theresa Ashford Moss of Detroit, Mich., and Elder Julia Elaine Smith of Kinston; one sister, Mattie Flanagen of Goldsboro; one brother, Isaiah Ashford of Philadelphia, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

The body will lie in state Monday from 2 until 6 p.m. at McIntyre Funeral Home Ministries.
