JOHN SMITH SR.

DEEP RUN -- John Braswell Smith Sr., 80, of 5799 Hwy. 258 South, died Monday.

Mr. Smith the son of the late Mark Nicholas and Lula Southerland Smith. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he farmed until 1986 and then worked 14 years as a crop adjuster with North Carolina Farm Bureau. He was a charter member of Deep Run First Baptist Church and the Deep Run Ruritan Club. He was pas master of the Pleasant Hill Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Lenoir County Shrine Club.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Heath Smith of the home; one daughter Kay Jones of Kernersville; one son John "Johnny" Smith Jr. of Clinton; two sisters, Themise Hall of Plymouth and Ellen Tyndall of Deep Run; one brother, Mark Louis Smith of Belhaven; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Deep Run First Baptist Church. The Rev. Jimmy Williams will officiate. Burial, with Masonic rites, will be in Pinelawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 9 p.m. at Howard-Carter Funeral Home.
