George Thornton Gardner, 72, of 114 Bryanwood Drive, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late James H. and Mary Thornton Gardner, and was married to Dannie McDonald Gardner. He was retired from the N.C. Department of Revenue and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War.

A graduate of Atlantic Christian College (Barton College), he attended Faith Alliance Church. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed camping. Mr. Gardner had previously lived in Mount Airy and Wilmington.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverends Tim Leever and Dean Bracewell will officiate. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Donna Gardner Bracewell of Morristown, N.J.; a son, Jeffrey Todd Gardner of Efland; a sister, Melba Anderson of Goldsboro; a brother, James H. Gardner Jr. of Angier; and five grandchildren.

The family requests no flowers, though memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 5970 Fairview Road, 3 Fairview Plaza S-408, Charlotte, N.C., 28210.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Seymour Funeral Home.
