GREENVILLE -- Edgar Jackson "E.J." Eatman, 83, died Thursday.

The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Entombment, with Masonic rites, will follow at the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park.

Mr. Eatman was a native of Wayne County. He spent his early life in the Fremont community and was a graduate of Fremont High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theatre. A resident of Greenville since 1948, he was employed with Carolina Telephone Company (Sprint) for 45 years, serving various towns in North Carolina and retiring in 1986.

Mr. Eatman was a member and past master of Crown Point Masonic Lodge #708 A.F.&A.M., and was also a member of the Sudan Temple of New Bern and the Pitt County Shrine Club. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

Mr. Eatman was preceded in death by his mother, Saddie Wooten Eatman; and his father, Frank Eatman.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Florence Bland Eatman; two sons, James P. Eatman of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Edgar J. Eatman Jr. of Chapel Hill; two nieces, Phyllis Edmundson and Deborah Marm, both of Fremont; and one nephew, Stephen Yelverton of Washington, D.C.

The family will receive friends this evening 6 until 7:30 at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
