C.W. SURRATT JR.

ROSE HILL -- C.W. Surratt Jr., 89, died Wednesday at his home.

A graveside service was held this morning at 10 at Rose Hill Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 at Rose Hill United Methodist Church , where he was a member.

Mr. Surratt graduated from North Carolina Sate College with a degree in civil engineering and was involved in the timber industry for many years. He served as mayor of Rose Hill from 1959 until 1961 and served as president of the first Duplin Development Commission. His many civic contributions were recognized when Governor James Hunt awarded him the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1984.

Mr. Surratt is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois Peeler Surratt; daughter, Mary Ellen Golden of Wilmington; son, Robert W. Surratt of Concord; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
