BERTHA M. KORNEGAY
ALBERTSON -- Bertha Moye Kornegay, 89, formerly of the Albertson area, died Thursday, May 19, at SunBridge Care Center in Mount Olive.
A service to celebrate and remember her life was held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Woodland United Methodist Church near Albertson, of which she was a member. The Reverends Lynwood Boyette and Vernon Brown officiated. Her family received friends at the church following the service, and will receive friends at other times at the home of Mrs. Carl Kornegay, 919 Woodland Church Road, Albertson. Private interment will take place in Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
Born July 6, 1915, she was the oldest in a family of five children who grew up on a Duplin County farm. Her working career away from the farm began at Caswell Center in Kinston where she served as a house-mother. In 1944 she relocated to Wilmington to join other family members, and employment began with Sunshine Laundry where she was employed for 33 years, retiring as a secretary/bookkeeper. After retirement she returned to the Albertson area where she remained until recent years, becoming a resident of Mount Olive Retirement Village, Somerset in Goldsboro, and SunBridge Care Center in Mount Olive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ransom and Blanche Smith Kornegay, a sister, Florence Kornegay Jernigan Ferrell, and a brother, Milton "Bud" Kornegay.
Miss Kornegay is survived by two sisters, Thelma K. Kornegay of Albertson, and Mary Kornegay Dickson of Morehead City, along with several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Woodland United Methodist Church, c/o Tom Hroza, 1647 White Flash Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive is handling the service.
