E.V. GEORGE
Vice Bishop Evandus "E.V." George, 77, died Sunday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Four Oaks to the late Elder Sylvester and Ardella Stanley George and received his education in the Duplin County Schools. He received his call to the ministry at the age of 16 and made it public at the age of 20. He was ordained an Elder of Lily of the Valley Disciples of Christ Church in Smithfield, served as pastor of several churches in eastern North Carolina, and began a radio ministry in 1970.
He served on the Council Board of the Western Assembly of Christ for 14 years. He also had served as vice bishop of the Western Assembly of Christ for the past 27 years, under the leadership of Bishop Charles J. Williams Sr.
Vice Bishop George traveled extensively in the United States and to several foreign countries including Italy, Greece, Egypt, Africa, Israel and Jordan. He made over 10 mission trips to Haiti, where he helped to build a church.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Retha Fryar George of the home; 10 children and their spouses, Gladys Sutton (Reginald), Isaac George (Brenda), Bertha Smith (Lennie), Loretha Smith (Stanley), Arlene Kornegay, Evangeline Grandy (Woodrow), Shirley Simpson, Avandus George (Katina), Glenda Stevens (Dexter) and Levi George (Marylin); four brothers and their wives, Joseph George (Inetta) of Bowdens, James George (Connie) of Faison, Solomon George (Beatrice) of Bowdens and David George (Shirley) of Faison; four sisters, Armatha Leach of Washington, D.C., Mary Leach of Clinton, Esther Faison of Dudley and Joyce Fryar of Durham; three brothers-in-law, Clifton Fryar of Faison, Justice Fryar (Carolyn) of Tennessee and Isham Fryar of Wallace; seven sisters-in-law, Rosa Freeman (John), Shirley George (David), Gladys Williams (Oscar), Beulah Hill (Alexander) of Faison, Betty Smith of Virginia, Phebia George of Warsaw and Lula George of Goldsboro; and 31 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Western Assembly Building in Newton Grove. Bishop Charles Williams Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Cobbs Cemetery in Faison.
The viewing will be held Friday from 3 until 5 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home in Mount Olive, and an inspirational wake will follow from 7 until 8 p.m. at the Western Assembly Building. The family will be present during this time to receive friends. At other times they will receive friends at the residence.
