WILLIAM MAHONEY SR.

William A. "Captain Bill" Mahoney Sr., 92, of Whiteville, died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The funeral was held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Whiteville. The Rev. L. Kendell Cameron Jr. officiated. Burial was in Columbus Memorial Park.

Mr. Mahoney was the son of the late J.P. Mahoney and Lula Elizabeth Davis Mahoney. He served as superintendent with the Columbus County Department of Corrections for 33 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Whiteville and Lebanon Lodge 207, Sudan Temple, Columbus County Shriners Club, York Rite, and Scottish Rite. He was an avid sportsman and was a member of the Columbus County Coon Hunters Association, S.E.A.N.C., and the North Whiteville Deer Hunters Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise McKennon Mahoney, and is survived by one daughter, Linda Mahoney Jones of Goldsboro; one son, the Rev. William A. Mahoney Jr. of Greensboro; one brother, Linwood Ernest Mahoney of Manning, S.C.; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family received friends on Friday night at McKenzie Mortuary.
