RICHARD ABBOTT

ASHEVILLE -- Richard Monroe Abbott, 54, died unexpectedly on Friday, April 8.

A lifelong resident of Asheville, he was born in Temple, Texas. He was the son of Jodie and the late John Abbott, founders of John W. Abbott Construction Co. in Asheville.

Mr. Abbott was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In high school competitions, he was a North Carolina state champion swimmer for several seasons. He excelled in music and played guitar and keyboard with several professional bands.

He was a direct descendent of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. He was a member of SGI, an international peace and cultural organization and had worked for many years in the food service industry for several companies and country clubs in the Asheville area.

He is survived by his wife, Fran Etherington Abbott; a brother, Dr. Travis Abbott of Seattle, Wash.; his mother and a sister, Carolyn Hipp, both of Denver, Colo.; a brother-in-law, John L. Etherington Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Joan Lillich of Clifton, Va.; and his parents-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. John Etherington of Goldsboro.

A memorial service was held in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home, with Tim Nelson officiating.
