DOUGLAS MITCHELL

GREENVILLE -- Sam Douglas Mitchell, 71, died Friday at Pitt County Memorial Hospital after several years of declining health.

He graduated from Greenville High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Navy. He received a master's degree in education from East Carolina University in 1964 and retired from the Ayden school system after teaching English and drama for 30 years. He also acted in many plays at E.C.U. and was a regular in the Nutcracker for several years. He was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Ayden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. S.H.P. Samuel Houston Mitchell and Billie Akins Mitchell, and his stepmother, Claudia Hollowell Mitchell, who was from the Rosewood community near Goldsboro. He has no surviving relatives.

His friends will have a memorial service at a later date.
