JAMES E. ROSE

CLINTON -- James Edward Rose, 81, of 403 East Powell Street, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton, N.C.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Ed Gunter, Rev. Hugh H. Cameron and Dr. Homer Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Newton Grove, N.C.

Mr. Rose was born on August 4, 1923, in Newton Grove, N.C., and was the son of John W. Rose and Vennie Warren Rose. He was the ninth of eleven children, consisting of six boys and five girls. He was raised on a farm and always had plenty to keep him busy. On August 31, 1946, he married Lila Mae Weaver, and they had two daughters, Linda and Sandra.

Mr. Rose graduated from Newton Grove High School, and seven months later, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He served for three years as a member of the 12th Base Post Office on the Island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific, in the Philippine Islands, on the Island of Luzon, and then Manila. Upon returning home, he relaxed for two to three months and then was employed by Wellman Oil Company to operate a company branch in Newton Grove. He later became the office and warehouse manager of Wellman Oil Company in Clinton, where he worked until he was appointed to serve as Clinton City Superintendent. He resigned this position after he was appointed Buick dealer for Sampson County. He ran the dealership, J.E. Rose Buick Company for 31 years until it merged with Thornton Chevrolet on August 1, 1985. Mr. Rose worked with Thornton Chevrolet/Buick for five years, retiring on July 31, 1990.

On July 5, 1960, Mr. Rose was appointed by the City Council to the Clinton Planning and Zoning Board, serving as the chairman for his last eleven and one-half years. He resigned from this position on July 5, 1990. He was a member of the Clinton Rotary Club, having served as president and the chairman of many different committees over the years, and had perfect attendance for 48 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served nine years as superintendent of the Sunday School, two terms as Chairman of the Board of Stewards, as Assistant Usher, and as Chief Usher. Aside from the hard work he did, Rose liked to spend some free time enjoying his hobby of caring for his fruit orchard and his Santa Gerturdis cows.

Mr. Rose was preceded in death by three sisters, Blanche Rose Johnson, Jewell Rose Lynch and Elizabeth Rose Blalock, and three brothers, Graham W. Rose, Herbert E. Rose and John William Rose Jr.

Surviving are his wife, Lila Mae Weaver Rose of the home; two daughters, Linda Rose Winslow of Cary, N.C., Sandra Rose Jones and husband, Dan, of Smithfield, N.C.; a brother, Byron Rose of Clinton, N.C.; a sister, Bonnie Rose Hines of Goldsboro; three sisters-in-law, Evelyn Hollowell Rose, Lucille Clark Rose and Alice Sykes Rose; and three grandchildren, Emily Claire Winslow, Lauren Blair Winslow and Ginger Jones Pangle.

The family received friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home and other times at the home, 403 East Powell Street, Clinton, N.C.
