WINTERVILLE -- Bobby Ray Crawford, 62, died Friday.

The funeral service will be conducted today at 3:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Greenville. Burial will be in Winterville Cemetery.

Mr. Crawford, a native of and lifelong resident of Winterville, was a graduate of Winterville High School. For 29 years he worked as warehouse manager at Eastern Lumber Company in Winterville. He served as an alderman in Winterville from July 1970 to Dec. 31, 1990, serving as mayor pro-tem from 1986 to 1990. He resigned as alderman on Dec. 31, 1990, and became town clerk on Jan. 31, 1991. In May 1999 he was appointed as the first public works director for the Town of Winterville.

Mr. Crawford was a founding member of the Contentnea Metropolitan Sewerage District in 1974, serving as a board member until December 1999 and as vice-chairman from Dec. 27, 1995, to Dec. 22, 1999. He served on the Mid-East Commission Board from 1991 to 1996.

Mr. Crawford was a member of the Winterville Free Will Baptist Church and the Mohican Tribe #56 Order of Redmen.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willis Ray Crawford; and a brother, William H. "Bill" Crawford.

He is survived by his wife, Margie Nichols Crawford; one daughter, Michele C. Rogister and her husband, Charles, of Winterville; one son, Gary A. Crawford of South Carolina; two grandsons, Michael Rogister and Corey Crawford; his mother, Sarah Gray Crawford of Goldsboro; one brother, J.T. Crawford and his wife, Carolyn, of Fremont; and daughter-in-law, Sherry Skinner of Conetoe.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
