RICHARD WHITLEY SR.

The Rev. Richard E. "Dick" Whitley Sr., 84, of Hope Mills, died Friday at Duke University Medical Center.

He attended divinity school at Wake Forest in the late 1940s and was a Southern Baptist minister for 50 years. He served churches in Kinston, Deep Run, Goldsboro, Fayetteville, Rockingham, Lake Waccamaw, Calypso, Jacksonville and Lumberton. After retirement, he continued his ministry by supply preaching at various churches and teaching Sunday school at LaFayette Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Love; two daughters, Susan Russ of Fayetteville and Carolyn Walker of Wendell; one son, Richard Whitley of San Francisco, Calif.; one brother, Harvey Whitley of Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Louise Belote of Archdale; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was to be held today at noon at LaFayette Baptist Church in Fayetteville. Burial was to be in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

The family received friends on Sunday from 4 until 6 p.m. at Highland Funeral Service & Crematory in Fayetteville.
