JOSEPH J. SIMMONS

Joseph J. "Joe" Simmons, 78, died Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Nalley officiating. Internment will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel

Born in Huntington, W.Va., to the late Cephas Simmons and the late Glenna Neal Simmons Allen, he was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and was a retired self-employed paint contractor.

His wife, Opal Lee Sias Simmons, preceded him in death on May 16, 2004.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Cephas Ray and Peggy Simmons and Chester Phillip and Brenda Simmons, all of Pikeville; daughters and sons-in-law, Frances Kay and John Smith of Goldsboro and Patsy Lee and Bob Cook of Appleton, Wis.; a sister, Virginia Mossberg of Huntington, W.Va.; and 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Family members will greet friends at the funeral home until 9 p.m., immediately following service on Monday night. At other times they will be at the home of Kay and John Smith, 737 New Hope Road, Goldsboro.

They request that memorial gifts be directed to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, Ga., 30368-2454.
