MERLIN SMYTH
Merlin Etienne Smyth, 88, a resident of the Pines, died Wednesday.
Mr. Smyth was born in Chunar, India. He immigrated to the United States in January 1955 and later became a United States Citizen. He was a long-time resident of Janesville, Wisc., where he was employed with the Fitzgerald and Weber Oil Company until his retirement in 1983. He then moved to Jensen Beach, Fla., where he resided until moving to Goldsboro in March of 2002.
Mr. Smyth was honored by the Government of Burma for his fight in the Burma Army against the Japanese invasion during World War II.
Mr. Smyth was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Mary Hopkins Smyth. They were married in December, 1952.
He is survived by a daughter, Gloria Smyth Sands, and her husband, Richard Sands, of Goldsboro, and two grandchildren, Melissa and Sarah; a brother, Bevys Smyth of British Columbia, Canada, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy J. Smyth of Janesville, Wisc.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at the Pines of Goldsboro on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at 1:30 p.m.
