JEAN ALLEY

Jean Smith Alley, age 66, died unexpectedly Wednesday at her home following a brief illness.

She was born in Franklin County to the late James Rapha and Ruth Powell Smith. A graduate of East Carolina Teachers College, she was a former school teacher and currently was Vice-President of Gran Alley Company, Inc. A member of Goldsboro Friends Meeting, she was a former Sunday School Teacher and had served as Clerk of Ministry and Counsel. She helped to organize the Montessori Program in Wayne County and was a board member with the Protestant Preschool and Wayne Country Day School. She was active in the fight against cancer, having served with her husband, John, as Co-Chair in the Wayne County Cancer Crusade.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Goldsboro Friends Meeting with David Brindle officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Willow Dale Cemetery with The Rev. Gene Carpenter, Rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and David Brindle, Pastor of Goldsboro Friends Meeting, officiating.

Jean is survived by her husband, John G. Alley; a son, John G. Alley Jr., MD and his wife, Sandra, of Raleigh, N.C.; her sisters, Wilma Rae Moody and her husband, Harvey, of Rome, Ga., Barbara Ann Thomas and her husband, Larry, of Wilmington, N.C.; her stepmother, Eula Smith of Louisburg, N.C.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Alley Hobbs and her husband, Grimsley. of Goldsboro, N.C.; brother-in-law, James T. Alley, MD and his wife, Barbara, of Macon, Ga.; nephews, Bryan Thompson Alley and his wife, Laura, of Goldsboro, N.C., Charles Granville Alley and his wife, Dana, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Grimsley Taylor Hobbs III and his wife, Catherine, of Goldsboro, N.C.; nieces, Cynthia Moody Earwood of Rome, Ga., Katherine Brittain Hobbs of Chapel Hill, N.C.; great-nieces, Miranda Shae Earwood, Emma Taylor Hobbs, Kristen Michelle Alley, Rebecca Lauren Alley; and great-nephews, Daniel Robert Alley and Joshua Granville Alley.

The family will be receiving friends Sunday night from 7 until 9 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, 2873 US Hwy. 117 South, Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Goldsboro Friends Meeting, 700 Guilford Street, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530; or to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, N.C., 27834.
