DOROTHY JONES

On early Wednesday morning, God called one of his teaching angels to eternal rest. Dorothy DeVaughn Jones was born on May 6, 1924, to the late Henry Wilson DeVane and Lillie Herring DeVane in Wilmington, North Carolina. The family later moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where Mrs. Jones received her early education. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School at age 16 and attended Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mrs. Jones transferred to West Virginia State College, where she received her undergraduate degree in English with a minor in French. She received her Masters in Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Mrs. Jones' teaching career began in Pikeville, North Carolina, and she later taught at Dillard High School as well as Goldsboro High School. She retired after 31 years of dedicated service, and she will be fondly remembered by the many students, parents and co-workers whose lives she touched.

Mrs. Jones was affiliated with several organizations. She was a charter member of the Continental Society Inc. and for 31 years was a member of Epsilon Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She had served as president and vice president in both organizations, in addition to serving as chairperson of major committees. She was also a member of the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association and the Dragonette Club.

Mrs. Jones was an active member of First African Baptist Church for many years. Her failing health prevented her from attending as regularly as she would have liked. She was also a member of the Stitch and Chatter Missionary Society at the church.

Mrs. Jones was married to the love of her life, John (Johnnie) R. Jones Sr. for 39 years. He received his heavenly reward on June 13, 1994.

Mrs. Jones was a loving, kind and proud mother. She loved her family, friends and generous neighbors.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, John Robert Jones Jr. (Marsha) of Louisville, Kentucky; two daughters, Carolyn Simmons Carr (Ethbert) of Kingsport, Tennessee, and Charlene Simmons Carr (Victor) of Greensboro, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Karen Y. Carr of Norcross, Georgia, Victor B. Carr Jr. (Tina) of Wylie, Texas; Erica C. Cole (Devon) of Clermont, Florida, and Anthony D. Carr of Marietta, Georgia; five great-grandchildren, Ciara, Jacquelyn, Devon Jr., Victor III and Ethan; three sisters, Elizabeth D. Bullock of Brooklyn, New York, Mabel D. Cole (Arthur) of Atlanta, Georgia, Mattie D. Davis of Baldwin, New York; brother-in-law, Benjamin Jones (Laurena); and sister-in-law, Eliza S. Jones.

Mrs. Jones was fortunate to receive loving care from Mrs. Nellie Rhodes Brown, Mrs. Van Cox, Mrs. Helen Davis, Ms. Bertha Greenfield, Ms. Barbara Jones, Ms. Sheila Jones, Mrs. Minnie Patterson, Mrs. Clifteen Shields and Mrs. Gail Worrells.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris Street. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

The viewing will be today from 6 until 8 p.m. at the church.

Lightner Memorial Funeral Home is serving the family.
