MOUNT OLIVE -- John Lemley Smith Jr., 86, of Mount Olive, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Maryfield at Pennybyrne in High Point.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with Dr. H. Dennis Draper Jr. and the Rev. Eugene Alexander officiating.

A native of Wayne County, Mr. Smith was a four-year U.S. Army Veteran, serving in New Orleans and other areas during World War II. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive, and was active in farming throughout his life.

Surviving are his wife, Bergie S. Smith; two daughters, Brenda Gaffney and husband, John J. Gaffney of Greensboro, and Betty Quinn and husband, E. Lee Quinn, of Seven Lakes; five grandchildren, Jay Gaffney and wife, Elizabeth Gaffney, Kevin Gaffney, Brian Quinn, Suzanne Quinn, and Patrick Quinn; a great-grandchild, Sydney Grace Gaffney; a sister, Doris Lee Bishop Pratt and husband, Leonard Pratt, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a sister-in-law, Catherine Smith of Goldsboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Lemley Smith and Louise Wolfe Smith, who were from Mount Olive, and a brother, Ralph Harris Smith, who was from Goldsboro.

The family will be at the residence, 508 W. Main St., Mount Olive.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kitty Askins, Home Health and Hospice Care, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive is handling arrangements for the family.
