JOSEPH B. BROOKS

Joseph Brian "J.B." Brooks, 73, of Harkers Island, died Thursday at Cartaret General Hospital.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Harkers Island. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, retired with Civil Service at Cherry Point and was a commercial fisherman and boat builder.

Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Harkers Island with Bishop Billy Paylor officiating. Burial was in Vergie Mae Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta R. Brooks; two sons, Lib Brooks of Harkers Island and David C. Brooks of Broad Creek; two daughters, Lori B. Smith of Broad Creek and Celeste B. Orr of Findlay, Ohio; two stepsons, G. Breen Smith of LaGrange and Kelly G. Smith of St. George, Utah; a stepdaughter, Vicky S. Smith of Nampa, Idaho; a brother, Henry A. Brooks of Morehead City; and two sisters, Edna Earl Scott of Harkers Island and Pearl Johnson of Charleston, S.C; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and 11 stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eula Mae Brooks; and his parents, James Gordon and Nettie Lewis Brooks.

The family received friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
