DON BARRETT
LAURINBURG -- Donald "Don" Wallace Barrett, 81, of 1007 W. Church Street, died at his home Tuesday evening, July 6, 2004, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Stan Smith and Rev. Nancy Willard.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Hunley Barrett; two sons, Jim Barrett and wife Sharon Tracey Barrett of Asheville and gubernatorial candidate Dan Barrett and wife Kathleen Anderson Barrett of Advance; one daughter, Betsy Barrett Rosemann and husband Ed Rosemann of Goldsboro; two brothers, Ret. Col. Reid Barrett and wife Huberta of Charlotte and Dr. Charles Barrett and wife Sally of Boiling Springs, S.C.; one sister, Betty Barrett Bell and husband David of Charlotte; "Papa Don's" six grandchildren, Emily, Amanda, Tracey, Frankie, Daniel and Rebekah.
Don was born February 24, 1923, in Spartanburg, S.C., and was the son of the late Rev. James A. Barrett and Bryte Forbes Barrett and stepson of Helen Reid Barrett.
Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He was a graduate of Wofford College and served in the Air Corps during World War II. He was also a retired industrial engineer with J.P. Stevens. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, served three terms as Laurinburg City Councilman, was co-founder of Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County, was a recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Service Award from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and was recognized as "Outstanding Senior Citizen" in 1994 by the Laurinburg Jaycees.
Don was involved as a community and church leader by example and behind the scenes.

Visitation will be immediately following the following the service in the Ed Guest Building.
