D. ALTON CRAWFORD

PIKEVILLE -- David Alton Crawford, 86, of Hinnant Road, died peacefully Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at his home.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late David and Callie Worrell Crawford. "Mr. Alton," as everyone knew him, was a long-time farmer in the Pleasant Grove Community. He was never seen without a smile. He helped everyone that needed help and never met a stranger. He will be missed. He ran Crawford Grocery from 1935 until his death. He was a fixture in the community and a dedicated member of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church. He honored God by serving as a deacon in the church and singing in the choir as long as his health allowed.

His wife, Sallie, and daughter, Shelby Jean, and brother, John Lee Crawford, preceded Mr. Crawford in death.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, July 1, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with Rev. Jerry Stephenson and Rev. Alvin Keener officiating. Burial will follow at the Pikeville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 Wednesday night at the funeral home and other times at the home of R.B. and Judy Crawford.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 1100 Pikeville-Princeton Road, Pikeville, 27863.
