DR. DONALD DEPPE

Dr. Donald Arthur Deppe of Goldsboro died Wednesday. Don was born Aug. 16, 1930 in Northampton, Pa., to Arthur William and Florence Rachel Henry Deppe.

He was a graduate of Northampton High School and attended Nyack Institute and Princeton Seminary. He earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Maryland and a doctoral degree at the University of Chicago.

His career included faculty appointments at the University of Maryland, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In addition, he held several positions with federal government agencies including Health, Education and Welfare, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the Department of Justice where he served as the first warden of the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner. Don was most recently employed and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a civilian director of long-range planning at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Cates Deppe; two children, Beth Deppe Webb of Washington, D.C. and Beverly Deppe Richardson of Grand Junction, Colo.; three stepchildren, Sharon Cates Canovali of Greensboro, James "Nick" Cates of Goldsboro and Randall Perry Picken; a grandson, Matthew Richardson, also of Grand Junction, Colo.; two step-grandchildren, Crystal Pickard of Durham and Landon Pickard of Creedmor.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church. The Rev. Neal Salter will officiated. Entombment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory.
