GARRY V. ORTON JR.

Garry Van Orton Jr., 79, of 429 Pecan Road, Dudley, died Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Garry Van and Beulah Ginn Orton and was married to Edna Sullivan Orton and the late Lois Waters Orton. A veteran of the U. S. Army, he served during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a self-employed farmer and entrepreneur and he was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church, the Adult Choir, E. L. Roberts Sunday School Class, and was a deacon.

The funeral service will be held tonight at 7 in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Johnny Sasser and the Rev. Rick Mondell officiating. Burial will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Orton is survived by a stepdaughter, Charlene H. Gurley of Goldsboro; stepson, Gilbert E. Howell of Goldsboro; a sister, Jewel O. Nelson of Emerald Isle; special nieces and nephew, Brenda O. Hancock, Sheila O. Leonard and Bonnie Orton, all of Jacksonville, Fla., and Steve Hardy of Naples, Fla.; and five step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren.

Family members will greet friends immediately following the service tonight, and at other times at the home.

They request that memorial gifts be directed to Emmaus Baptist Church, 714 Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, NC 28333.
