GLEASON YATES JR.

FUQUAY-VARINA -- Gleason Andrew Yates Jr., 66, of 308 Dauphine St., died Tuesday due to an extended illness.

He is survived by a son, Mark Yates of Goldsboro; two brothers, Melvin Yates of Goldsboro and Willie Van Yates of Apex; a sister, Doris Jean Upchurch of Cary; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Apex Funeral Home in Apex. Chaplain Eric Haddatz will officiate. Burial will be in Green Level Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Yates was a native of Apex and was the son of the late Gleason Andrew Yates Sr. and Mable Clark Yates. He was a former Chief of Police with the Apex Police and also had been employed as chief of Baldwin Florida Police Department, a deputy sheriff of Wake County, and an officer with the North Carolina Department of Corrections. He was a member of Green Level Baptist Church. in Apex, an avid hunter, fisherman and antique collector.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 today at Apex Funeral Home, and other times at the home of William and Doris Jean Upchurch, 2132 Carpenter Upchurch Road, Cary.

Flowers are welcome and memorial donations may be given to the Hospice of Heartland Home Health, 5400 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh.
