ERNEST MARTIN JR.
MOUNT OLIVE -- Ernest June Martin Jr., 80, passed away April 14, 2004, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Mount Olive.
Born on December 20, 1923, in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Ernest June Martin Sr. and Catherine Kornegay Martin.
After serving as a radar specialist in the U. S. Army during World War II, he finished getting his college degree in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then went in business with his father at the Cash Produce Company in Mount Olive until 1965 when he was selected as Postmaster in the Post Office in Mount Olive. He was postmaster for over twenty years. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive. From 1959-60 he served as financial secretary. In the seventies, he served on the Board of Trustees. In 1972 he was a member of the Tuscarora Council in the Croatan District and made many overnight trips with Troop 34 of Mount Olive. An original member of the Mount Olive Jaycees, he was selected in 1952 for a "Key Man" award for his outstanding work in the Jaycees. In 1972 he served for several years on the Human Relations Council. In 1979, he developed Gullain Barre' Syndrome and, as a result, took an early retirement in 1986.
His survivors include his wife, Betsy Raper Martin; two children, a son, Ernest June Martin III of Champagne, Illinois, and a daughter, Patricia M. Eden and husband, Robert Stanley Eden, of Houston, Texas; three grandsons, Richard Adam Basden and wife, Jennifer Lavender Basden of Houston, Texas, William Brian Basden and wife, Debbie Jeter Basden of Raleigh, N.C., and Christopher Robert Eden of Houston, Texas; and two great-grandsons, Jacob and Joshua Jeter Basden of Raleigh; a sister, Katherine Ann Lewis, and a nephew, Harry W. Lewis, III, both of Durham.
Visitation will be at Tyndall Funeral Home on Friday, April 16, from 7 until 9 p.m.
A graveside service will be on Wednesday, April 21, at 11 a.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.
Arrangements are being handled by Tyndall Funeral Home.
