JACK BRYAN

Jack E. Bryan, formerly of Lumberton, N.C., and Marion, S.C., died April 10, 2004, after a brief stay at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Mr. Bryan was 91 years old.

He was born September 19, 1912, in Mars Hill, N.C. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Williams Bryan, whom he married in 1939. In 1965 he married Hattie Berry Bryan. Mr. Bryan moved to Lumberton in 1940 where he bought Hedgepeth Pharmacy from Rom Hedgepeth. He was also co-owner of Lumberton Drug Company and North Elm Pharmacy. Mr. Bryan was a World War II Veteran. He was a member of St. Alban's Masonic Lodge in Lumberton, having been a member for over 50 years as well as having been a member of Kiwanis International in Lumberton for more than 30 years. In 1970 Mr. Bryan retired and moved to Calabash, N.C., where he lived until 1978, at which time he moved to Marion, S.C., and resided there until he went to live with his daughter in 2000. At the time of his death, Mr. Bryan was a member of Marion Baptist Church in Marion, S.C.

A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, N.C. the family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

Mr. Bryan is survived by his brother, C.R. "Dick" Bryan of Belmont, N.C.; his daughter, Kathryn Smith and her husband, Chaplain Lt. Col. Steward Smith of Goldsboro; his son, Billy Bryan and his wife, Jane, of Topsail Island; six grandsons, Mark C. Smith of Okinawa, Japan, Chad Smith of Wilmington, Jeffrey Bryan of Lumberton, John Hammett of Oxford and Joe Hammett and Jeff Hammett, both of Concord; three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Marion Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3, Marion, S.C., 29571, or to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

Arrangements are being handled by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home & Crematory of Goldsboro.
