MARY QUINN
Beloved wife and mother, Mary (Marie) Watkins Quinn passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2004, surrounded by family and friends.
"A lady before her time," Mrs. Quinn was very successful for many years as a single mother with five children. With tenacity, determination, courage, strength and love she raised five beautiful children while maintaining a strong character for which she was known. She lived life with courage, grace, strength, hope and a great love for her family and friends.
Mrs. Quinn was very civic minded and loved being active in her community. She served on the beautification committee in the town of Magnolia. She was an active member of the Republican Party and served as Registrar for the Magnolia Precinct. She enjoyed giving her time to fund raise for needy families, the local Fire Department and anywhere else there was a need. She was a member of the Garden Club, the Ladies Circle and served as president of the Women's Club. In 1994 she was selected by her community to receive the Distinguished Citizen Award for her service to fellow citizens. Mrs. Quinn was a licensed medical technician and served on the Magnolia Rescue Squad for twenty years. She spent many years as a mentor with the AL-ANON program helping troubled women overcome personal problems and addictions. She also served as a Big Buddy for unfortunate children as they held a special place in her heart.
Mrs. Quinn was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for more than twenty years. She was a faithful member who served in any way that was needed.
Mrs. Quinn spent her time in many various endeavors. She was an avid sports enthusiast and was happiest watching North Carolina Tarheels play basketball. She always enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. Her love for flowers and trees brought her much happiness. Her ultimate happiness in life was cooking and preparing dinners in order to have her family assembled together.
With high expectations, integrity and her love for fellow man, Mrs. Quinn set an ultimate civic and familial example for anyone to follow.
Mrs. Quinn is survived by her husband of 44 years, James Thomas Quinn of Magnolia; her children, Dorothy C. Noe and husband Chuck Noe of Wilmington, Ula Mae Piner and husband Willy Piner of Wallace, Gladys Hull and husband Marc Hull of Goldsboro, Willy Cole of Wallace and David Cole of Magnolia; her brothers and sisters, Dewey "Shorty" Graham Watkins and wife Jean Watkins of Jacksonville, Christine Dail of Clinton, and Frank Watkins of Kenansville. She leaves behind a legacy of sixteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held today at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church. Burial was in the Devotional Gardens, Warsaw.
The family received friends on Tuesday night from 7 until 9 at Community Funeral Home.
