ROBERT E. GODWIN

PIKEVILLE -- Robert Earl Godwin, a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant, died Friday in his home. He was 79.

Born in Wake County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Lula Betty Poole Godwin and was married to the former Hilda Lancaster. A four year veteran of the U. S. Navy, he retired from the U.S. Air Force, seeing duty during World War II and receiving the World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars and the European-African Medal with one Bronze Star along with the Air Force LSA with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.

Funeral services with military honors will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, assisted by the Rev. Ira Williford. Entombment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert Earl Godwin Jr. of San Diego, Calif., and Bryant Franklin Godwin of Raleigh; two stepsons, Danny A. Leverette of Auburn, Ala., and Hank Holden of Nags Head; a daughter, Donna Langley of Raleigh; one brother, B. F. Godwin Jr. of Raleigh; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Family members will greet friends this afternoon from 4 until 6 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home & Crematory and at other times at the home. They request that memorial gifts be directed to Disabled American Veterans, 112 Patrick St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.
