OWEN MARTIN SR.

WARSAW -- Owen Bryant Martin Sr., of 532 W. College St., died Tuesday.

He was born in Warsaw on June 24, 1922, to the late Henry and Lena Martin. He joined the Warsaw First Baptist Church at an early age and was an active member until the later stages of his illness. He served on the deacon and trustee boards and the scholarship committee and was instrumental in the creation of the R.A. Morris Fellowship and the building of the education building.

A graduate of Warsaw High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he received a bachelor of science degree from Winston-Salem State Teachers College and a master's degree in education administration from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. His career with the Duplin County Public Schools spanned 36 years and included service as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. He was a Shriner and was a member of the Warsaw Town Board, Tyre Lodge #60, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beatrice Kenan Martin of the home; on daughter, Leatrice Martin Short of Durham; one son, Dr. Owen Martin Jr. of Warsaw; one daughter-in-law, Dr. Angela Butler Martin of Warsaw; one son-in-law, Merritt Short III of Durham; and one granddaughter, Leatrice "Leah" Elizabeth Short of Durham.

The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Warsaw. The Rev. Tommy Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Martin Cemetery.

The body may be viewed at the church two hours prior to the funeral.

The funeral procession will line up at the residence at 1:30 on Friday afternoon.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Baptist Church Scholarship Committee.

Rhodes Funeral Home in Warsaw is serving the family.
