DUDLEY -- John Cotton Rawls, 76, of 155 US Hwy. 13 South, died Saturday at his home.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Love Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. Eugene Warrick will officiate.

Mr. Rawls was born in Beaufort County to the late Guy O. and Pearl Whichard Rawls. He retired from Carolina Power & Light Co. and was a member of its retirees' group, The Pioneers. He was also a member of Love Memorial Baptist Church and The Brotherhood and was a Boy Scout leader. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Navy Reserves. He was one of the first Master Gardners in Wayne County and was very dedicated to the program, sharing with everyone his knowledge of gardening of plants, trees and lawns.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Musselwhite Rawls; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Andrew "Andy" and Diane Rawls of Wilson; a daughter and son-in-law, Sally R. and Michael Francis Bowles of Dudley; a brother, Loyd Rawls of Fayetteville; a sister, Mildred Rawls Deaton of Goldsboro; two grandchildren, Chelcie Elizabeth Rawls and Christopher Thomas Bartlett.

The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the funeral on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1201 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, 27534.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home is serving the family.
