JOSEPH WHITE
HAMPTON, Va. -- Joseph White, son of the late Lula B. and Deacon James White Sr., died on Jan. 21. He was 84.
He was one of the founding members of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, serving as a deacon until his health failed. His life's work was brick masonry, and after retirement he worked as a security guard.
Mr. White is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nevolia, and five children, Joseph (Carla) White of Laurel, Md., Patrice (James) Pierce of Fort Washington, Md., Angela White and Regina (Walter) Brown of Washington, D.C., and Joann (Ron) Butler of Hampton; three stepchildren, Sharon (Michael) McQueen, George (Marilyn) Massenburg Jr., and Harry Massenburg of Hampton. He is also survived by two brothers, James (Doris) White Jr. and William White of Hampton; and four sisters, Mary Johnson of Hampton, Mildred Staton of Richmond, Va., Elizabeth Arrington of Goldsboro and Dorothy Smith of Washington, D.C.; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Edward and Leonard.
Funeral services for Mr. White were held on Jan. 28 in Newport News.
