BETTIE HAWES
WALLACE -- Bettie Blanchard Hawes, 84, died Tuesday.
The funeral was to be held today at 4 p.m. at Rockfish Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Hawes was born in Pender County and was the daughter of the late Ward Caswell Blanchard and Pearl Carr Blanchard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Edward Boyette Hawes, in 1968, and also by a brother, James Kenneth Blanchard.
She graduated from East Carolina Teachers College and taught elementary school for 37 years, both in public and private schools. She served as president of Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teacher's sorority, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a life-long member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and worked on Presbytery committees. She also taught an adult Sunday school class for many years, taught Vacation Bible School, and was a youth leader.
She is survived by her children, Edward Boyette Hawes Jr. and wife, Linda, of Jacksonville, N.C., Julian Ward Hawes and wife, Sarah, of Goldsboro, Bettisue Hawes Tillman and husband, Joe, of Wallace and Doris Ann Hawes Farrior and husband, Keith, of Wallace; nine grandchildren, Eric Blanchard Hawes of Princeton, N.J., Zachery Barber Hawes of Jacksonville, Nathan Boyette Hawes of Raleigh, Ann Tillman Johnson and husband, Matthew, of Clinton, Andrea Tillman Waters and husband, Jason, of Sanford, Bettie Jo Tillman of Greensboro, Joseph Andrew Farrior of Wallace, Caroline Hope Farrior of Wilmington and Steven Keith Farrior of Wallace; two brothers, William W. Blanchard and wife, Catherine, Ward C. Blanchard and wife, Joyce, of Wallace; and two sisters, Mary Blanchard Horne of Wilmington and Doris Blanchard Brooks and husband, Charles, of Wallace.
The family received friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Padgett Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Joe and Bettisue Tillman, 407 E. Carr St., Wallace.
