In order to recognize the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation -- which occurred seven score and 15 years ago -- Wayne Country Day School has had the great honor of hosting two brilliant speakers to address the importance of the Civil War.
Dr. Peter Carmichael, director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, offered intriguing perspectives on various Civil War-related topics. Any and all curious students were invited to ask questions, (of which there were innumerable, excellent questions) which were discussed in detail by Dr. Carmichael.
This past week we were visited by Dr. Malcolm Beech, president of the United State Colored Troops Living History Association, who discussed the history of the Civil War and the events leading up to the Emancipation Proclamation.
Discussions included the historical significance of the USCT, its contributions to the war effort as a whole, and its legacy and impact in the United States. After the talk, students had the opportunity to ask questions and examine various Civil War relics and memorabilia.
Additionally, students were able to attend various cinematic events, in which Hollywood movies were compared against their actual, historical counterparts.
We had a surprise visit from some very noisy birds! Everyone agreed that nothing could be cuter than preschoolers disguised as penguins for the annual march -- and boy, did they know their stuff! Those little quackers had their penguin facts down pat.
Just a couple of weeks left to purchase a yearbook. Go to jostens.com and follow the links to our school.
I hope everyone is having a good February. Mid-winter break is almost here.
