PIKEVILLE -- A 41-year-old Pikeville man suffered a gunshot wound while cleaning what he thought was an empty handgun.

Wayne County sheriff's deputies were called to Pikeville Sunday night where they found the man near an outbuilding in the back yard of his home.

The man was being treated by his wife and daughter.

Deputies placed a tourniquet on the wound until Wayne County EMS arrived to take the man to Wayne UNC Health Care. The report did not say where the man was struck.

He told deputies he was cleaning his gun that he thought was empty.

"I always put seven rounds in an eight-round magazine," he told deputies.

Deputies said a black handgun was collected.
