Food service employers, catering owners and managers are invited to attend a session on Dec. 19 at Wayne Community College to help design a food training program.

The Wayne Business and Industry Center hopes to get input from those who employ servers and kitchen staff about the skills they expect from their personnel. The session will be held Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. in Room 101 of the Walnut Building.

Participants are asked to reserve their spots by contacting Linda Berard at 919- 739-6940 or lrberard@ waynecc.edu.

Wayne Community College is in a position to offer training for food and hospitality workers, and it wants to make sure it provides what local employers need, said Craig Foucht, the college's executive director of business and industry.

Restaurants and other eating establishments as a class employ the most people in the county, an average of 3,487 people, according to a 2016 North Carolina Department of Commerce report, he said.

"We have heard from Wayne County employers that it has been hard to find good help in the food services industry," said Foucht. "This is not just a local concern but a national concern, according to the National Restaurant Association."
