Wayne County EMS responded to a wreck on U.S. Highway 70 Bypass Thursday afternoon.

Update ---- The North Carolina State Highway Patrol identifies the driver of the truck that overturned on U.S. Highway 70 Bypass, and lists the charges against him.

A 2014 Freightliner Tractor Trailer, registered to C.R. England Inc., ran off of the road and into the woodline on US 70 Bypass East  near the 366.5 mile marker at around 1:27 p.m. today.

The truck was hauling raw pork from Smithfield Packing in Tarheel to its Kinston plant when the wreck took place. An estimated 45,000 pounds of meat spilled out of the overturned tractor trailer.

The driver, David Woodrow Wilson, 63, of Hope Mills, was traveling eastbound on US 70 Bypass when he ran off of the roadway to the right, hit the guard rail and struck several trees before coming to a rest, N.C. State Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Dorsey said. It is believed that fatigue and inattention were contributing factors.

Dorsey added that the driver is being charged with careless and reckless driving as a result of the wreck.

Firefighters from New Hope and El-Roy fire departments had to cut Wilson out of his seat belt. He was then taken to Wayne UNC Health Care and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The right hand lane of US 70 Bypass was closed while the scene could be cleared. The N.C. Department of Transportation helped with the clean up.

Initial report ---- A truck hauling raw pork for Gwaltney ran off of the road and into the woodline on US 70 Bypass East  near the 366.5 mile marker shortly before 1:30 p.m. today. As a result, the cab of the truck was wedged between trees and the trailer was damaged. Meat product then spilled onto the ground around the front of the truck.

The driver, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care after being extricated from the truck. His condition has not yet been made public.
