The Goldsboro City Council will consider site and landscaping plans tonight for the former Goldsboro Fire Station on Ash Street.

The 11,338-square-foot, two-story firehouse, at 109 E. Ash St., is proposed to become a fitness center on the first floor and an event center on the second floor. The vacant lot alongside the building is also planned for development as a parking lot.

The Goldsboro Planning Commission recommends to council a modification from the required number of parking spaces, 102, to the number proposed on the lot, 53. The modification is needed prior to approval of the site plan.

The plans will be reviewed during the 7 p.m. council meeting in City Hall, at 214 N. Center St.

In other business, the council will consider approving a $285,000 Golden LEAF Foundation grant, recently awarded to the city for the replacement of stormwater infrastructure on Glenwood Trail. The infrastructure was damaged during Hurricane Matthew, in 2016, and resulted in flooding and sinkholes in the area. The replacement is required within 12 months, and the grant does not require a city match.

The council is recommended to approve a $106,900 abatement and demolition contract with A/K Grading and Demolition. The properties condemned by the city and planned for abatement and demolition include 403, 407 and 409 Beale St., 1505 N. Berkeley Blvd., 403, 405, 407, 409, 411 and 413 N. Carolina St., 413 N. Carolina St., 400 and 605 E. Chestnut St., 614 Crawford St., 412 E. Walnut St., 1013 N. John St., 1508 Edgerton St., 607 W. Mulberry St., 235 Wayne Ave., and 438 E. Elm Street.

The Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. is also asking city leaders to transfer four city properties to the DGDC in an effort to better market the properties for development.

The properties are located at 200, 204 and 206 E. Walnut St. and 106 S. John St. The DGDC, a nonprofit, is also asking that the city maintain its property insurance for six months.
