Local nurses recognized for excellence

Ten nursing professionals at Wayne UNC Health Care have been recognized with Nurse Excellence awards.
The annual ceremony honoring outstanding members of the profession featured remarks from Janie Jaberg, hospital president and CEO, who became a registered nurse early in her career.
Each year, recipients are drawn from supervisors, co-workers and peers, with selection made by judges scoring the candidates on integrity, honesty, accountability, character, enthusiasm, caring, compassion and competency.
"Nurses are a highly valued and critical members of the care team," said Donna Wimberly, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of patient care services at the hospital.
"They not only take care of a patient's physical needs, but oftentimes provide emotional support and comfort as well.
"Outstanding nursing care is key to every patient's progress and healing. We are honored to recognize those who exemplify our standards and serve as an inspiration for our team."
The following were the latest round of Nurse Excellence recipients:
• Tonia Barnes, RN, sixth floor, has worked at Wayne UNC for eight years. She earned an associate's degree at Wayne Community College.
• Lori Brock, RN, in corporate health, has spent all 25 years of her career at Wayne.She earned an associate's degree at James Sprunt Community College.
• Dennis Doering, RN in behavioral health, has spent three of his four years in the profession at Wayne. A graduate of Wayne Community College, he earned a bachelor's degree in nursing at UNC-Wilmington.
• Christi Hardison, NA-II, nursing assistant, has been at Wayne for two years. She works in the peri-anesthesia unit, having earned an NA-I degree at Johnston Community College and her NA-II degree from WCC.
• Marquita Ingram, RN, is an oncology nurse and has worked at Wayne for 15 years. She earned an associate's degree in nursing at WCC and a bachelor's degree in psychology, justice and public policy at N.C. Wesleyan College.
• Heather Jones, RN, is an ICU nurse. She has spent five of her 18 years as a nurse at Wayne. She has an associate's degree in nursing from Vance-Granville Community College.
• Hayley Garris, RN, school health, has worked at Wayne all 14 years of her career.been a nurse for 14 years. She earned an associate's degree at WCC and a bachelor's degree in healthcare management at the University of Mount Olive.
• Crystal Gray, RN in ICU, has been a nurse for 12 years, six at Wayne. She earned an associate's degree at Lenoir Community College.
• Alison Hall, RN, endoscopy, has been a nurse for 13 years, eight of those at Wayne. She earned an associate's degree at WCC.
• Sidney King, RN in peri-anesthesia services, has worked at Wayne for five years, becoming a registered nurse three and one-half years ago. he holds an associate's degree from WCC and a bachelor's degree in nursing from UMO.
