Just over a half inch of rain fell in Goldsboro between 8 and 9 a.m. today as central North Carolina braced for the risk of isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms.

The storms are expected mainly this afternoon and evening.

The main hazard is expected to be damaging wind gusts. An isolated tornado is possible, especially along and north of Interstate 40 and this afternoon.

With the rain comes a trade-off.

There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms through Sunday.

There is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today increasing to 70 percent through Tuesday before slacking off Tuesday night into Thursday.

The rain chances pick up again with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms Thursday night increasing to 50 percent Friday.

Monday was expected to be the hottest day of the week with a high of 89.

The highs will hover in the low-to-mid 80s for the remainder of the week.

Lows will range from 68 Tuesday to 71 Thursday might.
