US 70 resurfacing project underway

The resurfacing of nearly 20 miles of roadway along U.S. 70 in Goldsboro is underway and expected to be complete by the middle of December.
The N.C. Department of Transportation contracted with Barnhill Contracting for the $3.1 million project, which includes milling and resurfacing 19.59 miles of U.S. 70, from Uzzell Road to North William Street, said James Pearce, DOT communications officer.
"The work is needed to repair this older section of heavily traveled roadway," Pearce said.
The project also includes the resurfacing of all exit and entrance ramps along the U.S. 70 project area, including ramps at Berkeley Boulevard, Wayne Memorial Drive and North William Street, Pearce said.
"They're starting with the ramps and turn lanes before moving on to resurfacing the main travel lanes," Pearce said.
The milling and resurfacing is taking place between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 6 a.m., during a time with reduced impacts on motorists.
"Crews are working at night, starting at 8:30 p.m., so there will be some lane-closure impacts to motorists in the late evening," Pearce said.
Most of the resurfacing and some lane striping of U.S. 70 from Uzzell Road to Berkeley Boulevard have already taken place.
Additional crews have also been working more recently along U.S. 70, between Berkeley Boulevard and Wayne Memorial Drive.
Resurfacing of the highway is scheduled to be finished by Oct. 31, and the final permanent lane striping will look to be completed by Dec. 15, Pearce said.
