Wayne Community College hosts summer camps

Wayne Community College Continuing Education will hold more than a dozen youth camps this summer, nearly doubling the options it provided last year.
This is the fourth year for the summer camps, which has grown exponentially each year, said Lisa Newkirk, coordinator.
"Our curriculum (college credit) and Continuing Education Services departments work together to provide these opportunities for young adults to explore career options and to have fun while doing so," she said.
"We realize the importance of exposing young minds, at an early age, to a variety of topics to gauge their interest in career choices and to keep them active during the summer months to prepare them for the upcoming school year," said Renita Allen Dawson, associate vice president of Continuing Education Services.
New this year are three Summer Enrichment Camps and an Animal Science Career Exploration Camp, plus some past camps have been expanded to more grade levels.
"Since beginning our summer camps, we have listened to the parents in our community and because of their input, have increased our camps each year," Mrs. Dawson said.
The "Summer Enrichment: The Pre-College Experiment" camps are for rising seventh- and eighth-graders and tackle the topics of "Eye-Opening Science" (July 17-20), "Jaw-Dropping Math" (July 24-27), and "Rise Up with Reading" (July 31-Aug. 3). All sessions run 9 a.m.-noon.
They are will be led by community college instructors and are designed to reinforce and enhance the students' regular academic coursework. Cost of each camp is $60 and includes a camp T-shirt.
In the Animal Science Career Exploration Camp, rising sixth- through eighth-graders can learn about careers in animal science and veterinary medicine through hands-on labs, workshops, and team building. Activities will include lessons in animal anatomy, food safety, chicken embryology and animal care. It will run July 24-27, 1-4 p.m. Cost of the camp is $60 and includes a T-shirt.
Rising high school freshmen through seniors can participate in the CSI Academy, July 10-13, 9 a.m.-noon. Participants will practice the skills needed to analyze evidence then apply those procedures at a mock crime scene. The cost is $80 and includes a T-shirt.
In Fashion Camp: An Exploration of Design and Sewing, campers will be introduced to basic sewing techniques, sewing machine operation and fashion design principles, while creating a final project to display. The session for rising sixth- through eighth-graders will be June 12-29, 1-5 p.m., while rising ninth- through 12th-graders is set for July 17-Aug. 3, 1-5 p.m. The $60 fee covers all sewing and class materials.
The Information Technology Academy introduces various aspects of computer hardware. Students will learn about the process of disassembling and reassembling computers along with programming using a Raspberry Pi, a credit card-sized computer.
Two sessions will be offered -- June 26-29, 8 a.m. until noon for rising sixth- through eighth-graders and 1-5 p.m. for rising ninth- through 12th-graders. The $80 cost also covers a T-shirt.
A Video Game Academy will introduce simulation and game development. Participants will try 3-D modeling, video game creation and bug testing and programming. They will gain experience designing and producing game artifacts that they can share. The camp will include a gaming tournament with the winner receiving a medal.
Both rising sixth- through eighth-graders and rising ninth- through 12th-graders will attend the Video Game Academy June 19-22: 8 a.m.-noon for middle-schoolers and 1-5 p.m. for high schoolers. Cost is $80.
The popular Allied Health Career Exploration Camp will return. Dates will be June 12-15 with rising sixth- through eighth-graders, 8 a.m.-noon, and from 1-5 p.m. for rising ninth- through 12th-graders. Campers will get a general overview of the health care field and learn basic first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The price is $60 and includes a camp T-shirt and First Aid and CPR certificate.
