MOUNT OLIVE -- A baseline concussion testing program at Mount Olive Family Medicine Center has earned the center statewide recognition as the N.C. Medical Group Management Association's 2017 Practice of the Year.

The award was presented at the association's annual conference in Charlotte. The honor recognizes a medical group practice that makes significant contributions to its community, patients and staff through volunteer work, fundraising, staff wellness programs, community cleanups, community screenings and education.

Mount Olive Family Medicine Center was recognized for its leadership in baseline concussion testing that provides a measurement of memory, reaction time and processing speed so that in the event of a concussion physicians can be assured the patient has returned his or her full capabilities.

"Mount Olive Family Medicine Center truly signifies all that our Practice of the Year Award stands for," said Fran Sembert, the association's president and chair of its Governance Committee. "The practice continues to grow and change to meet the needs of the population they serve, and the community benefits from the education that is now provided directly to teachers, guidance counselors, coaches and parents. This resource is now local to their patients, many of whom have transportation issues and financial restrictions."

The award is sponsored by First Citizens Bank, which also provides a $3,000 check to the charity of the recipient's choosing.

As a nonprofit, Mount Olive Family Medicine Center will use the money to provide 150 free baseline concussion tests for students 12 years or older.

June 1 is the deadline to register at along@mofmc.com.

When registering include the following information about the child, name, date of birth, gender, sport(s) played, name of school, parent/guardian name, home address and contact phone number.

It also should be indicated if the student has ever been diagnosed with a concussion and if so, how and when.

Testing times and sites will be announced after registration.
