Goldsboro High School alumnus Christopher Jones said he is humbled to receive the Forty Under Forty Alumni Award.

A graduate of North Carolina Central University, Jones will be honored tonight in Durham, along with 39 other NCCU alumni.

Jones, 30, graduated from Goldsboro High and earned a bachelor of science in physical education and a master of science in athletic administration from NCCU.

"I'm humbled and thankful to be recognized as an honoree," he said. "Being a double alumnus from the university, as well as an employee because I worked there for a little while, holds a special place in my heart. My Eagle education is the reason I stand where I am today, personally and professionally. This honor is overwhelming."

The Forty Under Forty Alumni Award program began in 2012.

Jones said he is proud to be an Eagle. But before he became an Eagle, he was and will always be a Cougar.

"Ever since I was a little kid, it meant the world to me to go to Goldsboro High School," he said.

Jones said he attended Eastern Wayne Elementary from kindergarten through the fourth grade but went to Goldsboro Middle School in the fifth grade.

"I've been a Cougar ever since," he said.

He said Goldsboro High introduced him to self-discipline and athletics from his 10th-grade history teacher Roderick Peterson and basketball coach Sam Robinson.

"He (Peterson) demanded us to be great, and he pulled the best out of each and every student that was in his class," Jones said. "All the work that he made us do, when I got to college I felt like I was in Mr. Peterson's class all over again."

Jones said he gained a love for sports and athletics from Robinson. Jones credits his passion for athletics to Robinson, and "he will always hold a special place in my heart," he said.

Jones is now the director of development for athletics at Clarion University in Clarion, Pa.
