Nominations for the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce annual Cornerstone Award are being accepted through Sept. 1.

The chamber's most prestigious award recognizes an individual who has committed years of service for the betterment of Wayne County.

The lifetime achievement recognition is presented once a year to a person or couple, living or deceased, over the age of 40.

"It's all about what you're doing for the folks of Wayne County," said Neal Benton, Wayne County Chamber of Commerce board chairman. "It's basically a body of work where you're doing things for the betterment of the community, whether that's advancing through economic efforts, social issues, community involvement (and) those types of things."

Criteria considered in the selection process include someone who has provided longterm, continuous service and dedication to Wayne County residents, had a significant impact on the overall betterment of the area, considered part of the foundation of the area, and involved in business, education, government or other areas.

Nominations will be reviewed by previous recipients of the Cornerstone Award, said Kate Daniels, president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. The winner will be announced during the 2017 Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet, which will be held Jan. 26 at the Walnut Creek Country Club.

The recipient's name will be placed on a plaque and added to the ground at the Cornerstone Commons downtown.

The Cornerstone Award has been presented to influential leaders in Wayne County since 1996.

Nomination forms are available at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, at 308 N. William St., or on the chamber website. For more information, contact Lara Landers at 734-2241.
