Family members and caregivers of those living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are invited to attend a free community workshop next week.

Alzheimer's North Carolina is sponsoring the event, which will be held Monday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut Street.

The four-hour workshop will be educational and informative. Professional credit will be offered to those in that category, but the target audience is for family and friends living with the disease.

It will be an interactive workshop, organizers said, designed to help both the person living with dementia and those caring for them.

The featured presenter will be Melanie Bunn, dementia training specialist with Alzheimer's North Carolina.

The event will include an overview of dementia, approaches and strategies for care, overcoming some of the challenges and effective communication techniques. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of the speaker.

While there is no charge for admission, pre-registration is required. To register, call Lisa Levine at 800-228-8738 or e-mail llevine@alznc.org.

Lunch will be provided, and respite reimbursement is available by calling the above number.

There are also currently two support groups in Goldsboro for those with loved ones dealing with related forms of dementia. One meets the first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. at St. Paul UMC. Contact person is Anne Paugh, 919-759-2267.

The other meets every other Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. Contact person is Tracy Smith at 919-242-6369
