A man, who has not yet been identified, died Wednesday in a single-vehicle wreck off N.C. Highway 581 North.
Little River Fire Chief Mike Aycock said the driver of a Ford Ranger was killed when his vehicle went off the road, rolled over and came to rest near a tree.
The wreck took place at 8:10 p.m. near 1691 N.C. Highway 581 N. in Pikeville.
"I'm not sure if he hit the tree or not. We never found an eyewitness who could tell us what happened," Aycock said.
The vehicle appeared to have been headed south on N.C. Highway 581 when it went off the road, he said.
Little River Volunteer Fire Department was called out to the scene and found the driver pinned in the vehicle. Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department handles extrication for that area and was called in to support Little River, Aycock said.
"They got there and were able to get him out. EMS 21 from the Rosewood station of the Rosewood Fire Department got him into the ambulance. They performed CPR for 30 to 45 minutes but were unable to revive him," Aycock said.
Aycock said the vehicle appeared to have rolled over, but he was not sure if that was a result of striking the tree.
Messages left with the N.C. State Highway Patrol seeking additional information went unreturned by press time.
