Two rising seniors from Wayne County Public Schools have been chosen to attend sessions of the 2015 Governor's School of North Carolina this summer.

Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the country.

The program is only open to rising seniors, with exceptions made for rising juniors in the area of visual and performing arts.

There are two campus locations for the session -- Governor's School West, established in 1963 at Salem College in Winston-Salem, and Governor's School East, introduced in 1978, now located at Meredith College in Raleigh. Both WCPS representatives will attend on the East campus.

Attending from WCPS will be Auston Gray, a student at Spring Creek High School. He will study natural science.

Casey Pursifull of Wayne School of Engineering will study math.

They are among 600 students chosen to participate in this year's program.

The 2015 session will run from June 16 through July 29.

Both students were recognized at this month's school board meeting.

Dr. Sandra McCullen, interim superintendent, also extended her congratulations to both students and wished them well in their selected area of study during the summer enrichment opportunity.
