FREMONT -- The Fremont Small Town Economic Prosperity committee viewed potential options for the new town logo at Tuesday night's meeting.
None of the options met with approval.
STEP chairman Keith Spivey said he would be open to feedback, prompting a round table discussion that resulted in the committee opting to keep the logo pretty much as is, and abandon all other options drawn up by the contracted artist.
"There are 18 towns in this country with the name of Fremont, I would like it to say somewhere that it is North Carolina," Mayor Darron Flowers said.
The logo painted in the conference room of Fremont town hall reads: Fremont, North Carolina. The logo on the town's stationary, however, says "Town of Fremont." Inside the logo are three daffodils.
The decision reached is that the new logo should add the state name and remove, "Town of," and reduce the number of daffodils included from three to one. The move should cut the cost of reproduction, Spivey said.
"The more detail the logo has, the more it costs to implement," he said.
Discussions also included a potential purchase of nine 70-pound pots in which flowers will be planted. The pots would be placed along Main Street between the street lights as part of the town beautification project. The money to purchase the pots would be drawn from STEP grant funds.
Additionally, there was talk of purchasing four benches for the town, heavily constructed and bolted to the ground, that would enhance town beauty. The grant would cover half of the total cost -- yet to be determined -- and community members could opt to pay the other half.
The community group purchasing each bench could then add a plaque to their bench in memory of a person of their choosing. Discussion of the benches was tabled until more information regarding costs could be obtained.
Additionally, Flowers commented that Fremont Police Chief Paul Moates will be out of service for a time due to impending back surgery. Flowers declined to say how long the chief would be out, but said the town would treat it like it would any other absence, such as a vacation.
When asked who would be placed in charge of the Fremont Police Department in Moates' absence, Flowers said he did not know.
A call placed to Fremont Town Hall this morning revealed that Sgt. Greg Bottoms is currently the ranking officer.
