Goldsboro police captured one armed man and are searching for another after two suspects in dark clothing attempted to break into the Family Dollar at 1403 Wayne Memorial Drive as the business was closing Sunday.

The subject in custody carried a rifle that police say was ready to be fired.

Ni-Quawn Orlando Kornegay, 19, 1001 N. Center St. is charged with attempted armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Sgt. Jeremy Sutton said the rifle Kornegay allegedly carried had been altered.

"It was made shorter so it was easier to carry. It could be more easily concealed, like down a pant leg," Sutton said.

The rifle was found loaded with a full magazine and a round chambered.

Kornegay has been placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $250,000 secured bond awaiting a first appearance later today.

According to the police report, the clerk inside the store was counting money in the back office at 9:06 p.m. when she noticed the two men on the store's security camera attempting to break into the business.

She called 911.

Officers responded in time to witness two black men running into the woods, the report said.

Police officers caught up with Kornegay and placed him under arrest. A Wayne County Sheriff's Office K-9 had to be called in to locate the firearm.

The second suspect escaped and the only description listed is that of a black male in dark clothing.
