The family of Jamell Sherrod, 39, found dead near Fremont in December 2013, is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for his death.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office announced the reward Friday through a press release.
Deputies were called to investigate the death of Sherrod, of 503 S. Vance St., on Dec. 23, 2013.
The cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the weapon was recovered at the scene, Maj. Tom Effler said.
What began as a suicide investigation is now being conducted as a death investigation, but has not been ruled a homicide, he said.
"The family had some questions we thought were relevant, and we had some more questions we would like answered, so we decided to continue the investigation," Effler said.
To date, no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information regarding Sherrod's death is asked to call Detective Lt. Carl Lancaster at 919-731-1489, or contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 919-731-1480.
Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255, or text tips to 919-222-4230.
Crime Stoppers will pay an additional cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to a felony arrest.
